Mazarron
spelt Mazarrón itself is characterized by its
mining past and maritime tradition, having many important historical
castles & defensive towers; you will not be able to miss the ruins
of the castle of Los Velez. There are also a number of beautiful churches;
the 16th Century San Andres (situated behind the town hall) with its
stunning mudejar paneling. The 19th Century Town Hall
in the square with its modernist style, and the distinctive Old Cultural
Centre.
It is also steeped in history dating back to the Roman times, there is now open to the public a roman salting museum which is well worth a visit. Also worthy of note is the discovery of two Phoenician Boats; the oldest in the world, found in the waters of Mazarron in 1989 following some underwater exploration, the excavation of the 1st boat was carried out in 1995 and is now in the National Sub- aquatic Archaeological Museum the 2nd boat still remains under the sea.
The major towns and villages of the region are host to many open air music and dance festivals particularly throughout the summer months. Among the beaches, supermarkets, marina & general facilities, there are many bars in Mazarron as well as some great restaurants in Mazarron.
