Lorca
is a large town with a lot of history and in fact was declared a Historical
site in the early 1960's. There are churches, convents
and palaces dating from the 15th to the 18th Century. It has an excellent
shopping area but is most famous for its large fortress
which dominates the town. It is possible to tour the fortress
with an English speaking guide. Lorca also has a wealth of fiestas,
festivals & cultural events which
are well known for being lavish, not forgetting the annual Rock Festival
to be enjoyed by the visitor and local alike. The town blends its historical
heritage with modern life.
Lorca is a favourite destination for anyone who enjoys the traditional market. The handicraft centre is located in Lope Gisbert Street but Lorca also has a municipal market near the train & bus station where fruit, vegetables fish & meat are available. On Thursdays you can get into the Fair Enclosure of Santa Quiteria where you will find available products from the orchid, footwear, clothes and everything for around the home.
If food is the way to your heart then why not try some of the local cuisine, one dish only found in Lorca is "Crespillos" this unique appetizer is made with red pepper, salt & flour.
Lorca is also an important commercial centre and to this end has a well designed easily accessible network of train, coach & motorway connections.
