La Azohia...
Azohia
is an old unspoilt Spanish fishing village situated at the most easterly
point of the Mazarron, roughly 10 kms east from the popular resort of
Puerto de Mazarrón. It is a peaceful and tranquil place to visit
for a relaxing holiday. With spectacular views of the sea, solitary
beaches, plenty of places to walk or cycle, or for the more adventurous
there's always Deep Sea diving at Cabo Tinoso, which is said to be one
of the best spots in Spain by divers far and wide. The beautiful tower
of St. Elena in Azohia was built in the 16th Century as a watch tower
against pirates, being some 70 metres high the views across the bay
are amazing, just below the tower set in the mountainside are the now
abandoned remains of a military station built around 1939. Also from
this viewpoint you can see the huge nets and cages where tuna is farmed.
The Historical City of Cartagena, one of the oldest cities in Europe,
is only twenty minutes drive over the mountains.
The mountains finally recede behind a peninsula called Cabo Tinoso which is where you will find two huge 38.1 Vickers guns, alleged to have been used in the making of the 1961 film "The guns of Navarone". The Castillitos battery (now abandoned) is certainly a place of interest for both military historians and photographers as the views of the Mediterranean alone are breathtaking. The fort which is built into the mountainside in the style of a castle is abandoned but there is still plenty to see, the centrepiece being two enormous batteries which were once part of the shore defences for Cartagena. There are sighting points, artillery rooms; control rooms etc. (take a torch as some of the artillery rooms are quite dark).
